Food Systems Transformation: Mapping and Stakeholder Engagement

I work on a number of international projects focusing on bringing a diverse range of actors together to identify opportunities for food systems transformation. Tools and techniques used include scenario planning, systems & stakeholder mapping and the development of visions and new narratives.

Current & Recent Work

Global Alliance for the Future of Food

Leading a food-health nexus stakeholder engagement process aimed at amplifying the fundamental role food systems play in creating health and well-being outcomes that promotes and restores ecological, human, and animal health.

The project aim is to scale policy and practice which restores good ecological, human, and animal health outcomes. We use a stakeholder led engagement process ( workshops, interviews, surveys etc.) drawing on insights from food and health actors, across the world, to develop a new vision and narrative, ‘Food Systems Transformations – Promoting Human, Ecological, & Animal Health & Well-being‘.

We have also published a set of 13 case studies demonstrating good practice and a Guide for Government Action, highlighting 14 recommendations for governments to promote good health. Ongoing work during 2021 includes working with health organisations to advocate for policy and practice change in the lead up to the UN Food Systems Summit and Glasgow Climate Change Conference (Ongoing: Oct. 2018 -Dec. 2021)

Salzburg Global Seminar and the Global Alliance for the Future of Food

Lead author of the sustainable and healthy diets hot topic paper as part of a stakeholder led process of engagement on the Climate Emergency and the Future of Food international dialogue – identifying policy and practice frameworks which can be used in upcoming key international milestones— the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the UNFCCC COP 26 and the Food systems summit in 2021. (Completed January 2020)

Forum for the Future

Instigated and led an international collaborative project called the Protein Challenge 2040, which aims to ensure healthy and nutritious forms of protein within environmental limits. The use of system mapping and scenario planning was used to identify 3 areas of innovation: scaling up plant protein consumption, sustainable animal feed innovation and closing the protein nutrient loop. Subsequently I produced a protein policy briefing paper with the aim of identifying options for national level policy interventions, in Europe, that support the transition to a sustainable & resilient protein system. (Completed 2018).

System Mapping was a key technique used in the Protein Challenge Initiative.

Tea 2030

Work with Forum for the Future, in partnership with TeaSwaps Ltd and the Department for International Developments Business Innovation Fund, focussing on a project to reduce the volatility of tea prices and boost the income of small-holder farmers in East Africa. Work included stakeholder engagement, research, project management and facilitating a number of workshops in Kenya (April 2018 – October 2019)
